What
is a Book of Shadows?
A Book of Shadows (BoS),
or Grimoire, is a spiritual journal kept by many
solitary and traditional Witches. It is more than a diary and orthogonal
to a Bible. It is a collection of
personal thoughts and meaningful statements, an expression of a
state of being. Where a Bible states
the path to follow, a Book of Shadows shows the
road as it has been. It is a collection of information designed
to build reference and spiritual growth, for yourself or for a coven.
It is also used in many covens to teach new Witches about the craft.
Almost all can contain teachings and lore, rituals and recipes,
spells and songs, passages from favorite books, information on magical
topics, words of wisdom, insights, magical poems, dream interpretations,
divination results, listing of pagan stores, order houses, and contacts.
A Book of Shadows can be anything from a nicely
bound blank book filled with beautiful calligraphy, a spiral-bound
notebook and a ball-point pen, or loose-leaf sheets and a pencil.
The first thing put into
a Book of Shadows should be the Wiccan

at her peak, then your heart's desire seek. Heed the North wind's
mighty gale, lock the door and drop the sail. When the wind comes
from the South, love will kiss thee on the mouth. When the wind
blows from the West, departed souls will have no rest. When the
wind blows from the East, expect the new and set the feast. Nine

lest ye be counted as his friend. Merry meet and merry part, bright
the cheeks and warm the heart. Mind the Threefold Law you should,
three times bad and three times good. When misfortune is enow, wear

do what ye will.
